HAAARCH!!! 2019

HAAARCH!!! is a yearly showcase of undergraduate research, creative work, and achievement. This forum provides students the opportunity to exhibit, present and promote their research and experiential learning activities. HAAARCH!!! 2019  will be held on Monday, March 25th  from 4 – 6 pm on the ground and first floors of the Frick Fine Arts building.

    Annie Abernathy

    Annie Abernathy is a sophomore, majoring in the History of Art and Architecture and pursuing minors in Museum Studies and French. Currently, she is an intern at the Carnegie Museum of Art where she is conducting preliminary research for an upcoming exhibition on art and economic inequality. This semester she has also been awarded the Archival Scholar Research Award and is researching materiality and identity in artists' books and zines in the Frick Fine Arts Library collection. She will be presenting this project as well as sharing her on-going research from Professor McCoy's class, focusing on mobility and exchange within Chinese objects in the University Art Gallery collection.

    Reagan Harper

    Reagan Harper is a senior double major in historic preservation and anthropology with a minor in museum studies. She is interested in how technology can be used to bring historic structures and galleries to the broader public that is unable to travel to them. At Pitt, Reagan has been involved with the Nationality Rooms as a tour guide and the president of Quo Vadis, in Residence Life through the National Residence Hall Honorary, and Games-Edu, and the Anthropology club. During her Junior year, she received a London Field Studies award which took her to London for two weeks to explore galleries and archaeological sites which has grown into her thesis.

    Rebecca Moser

    Rebecca Moser is a senior majoring in the History of Art and Architecture with minors in Museum Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. During her time at the University of Pittsburgh, Rebecca has served as an intern for the Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon as well as held the position of the Fine Foundation Fellow at the Andy Warhol Museum in the curatorial department during the summer of 2018.

    At HAAARCH!!!! Rebecca will be presenting her honors thesis, “Queer Entomologist: Andrey Avinoff, Butterflies, and Coding Homosexual Identity”. This project is a culmination of her interests in twentieth century art, queer history, and critical theory.

    Emma Vescio

    Emma Vescio is a senior History of Art and Architecture major with a minor in English. She is interested in queer theory, relationships with objects, intimacy, definitions, personal archives, and time. Emma has held positions with Carnegie Museum of Art, Mattress Factory: Museum of Contemporary Art, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Bunker Projects, Silver Eye Center for Photography, and other Pittsburgh-based arts organizations. She hopes to continue her passion for contemporary art in grad school within the upcoming years, and ultimately plans to pursue a career in curation or exhibition planning.

    At HAAARCH!!!, Emma will be discussing her honors thesis project on contemporary artist Adam Milner. Her thesis is a comparative study on Adam Milner’s work in relation to artists such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Andy Warhol. She examines notions of Milner’s life and collections of objects as an archive while discussing the intricacies of existing as a queer artist.

    Anna Kate Payha

    Anna Kate Payha is a junior pursuing a major in Architecture with a minor in Studio Arts. When she started at Pitt, she didn't know what she wanted to study, but after taking Approaches to the Built Environment and Foundation Studio Anna Kate found that architecture is her passion. Last summer she interned for an artist in Portugal to explore her interests and broaden her experience. At HAAARCH!!! 2019,  Anna Kate will be presenting her Studio 1 Project and a summary of her internship at Joana Vasconcelos Studio.

    Natalie Petrini

    Natalie Petrini is a sophomore Architectural studies major with a minor in Philosophy. She grew up just north of Pittsburgh in Mars, Pennsylvania. She completed her first year of undergraduate school at Duquesne University, after exploring other majors she decided to pursue a degree in architecture. Eventually, she found her place here within the HAAARCH community. Natalie has ambitions to be a practicing architect in the future and is passionate about the importance of sustainability as well as the relationships between built and natural spaces. This summer, she hopes to complete an architectural internship where people may share these passions.

    At HAAARCH!!! 2019 Natalie will be presenting her Foundations Studio final project with which she explored the nuances between public and private spaces.

    Wanyan Ma

    Wanyan Ma is a junior majoring in History of Art and Architecture and Economics as well as minoring in Linguistics with Certificates in Asian and European Studies. She fell in love with art history in high school and has only become more enamored with it at Pitt.

    Wanyan studied abroad in Cuba and Italy last year – both amazing, incredible experiences. Ask her about all the art she saw! She is also a Pittsburgher but is not very good at it.

    For HAAARCH!!! 2019, Wanyan will be presenting her project for the Honors College’s THINK Research Fellowship, which looks at depictions of the cadaver in Western and Eastern art and medical illustrations. She gives a shout out to Professor Jennifer Josten.

    Maria Hernandez

    Maria Hernandez is a junior pursuing the B.S. degree in Architectural Studies and is minoring in Studio Arts. She originally started as a biology major taking art classes “for the soul”, but after hearing about the Architectural Studies program, she decided to investigate more. Upon  realizing that architecture was the perfect marriage of both logic and art, she decided to switch her major to Architectural Studies. 

     

    Maria spent summer 2018 working as an intern at Fisher ARCHitecture. At the same time, she also had the opportunity to work as an Architectural Educator at Carnegie Museum of Art’s Summer Camp. From last semester to present, she works at Carnegie Mellon University teaching Architectural Exploration Outreach for children. During the summer of 2019, she will continue to work for Carnegie Museum of Art’s Summer Camp program.

    Tom Lucy

    Tom Lucy is a graduating senior with a major in Architectural Studies on the Preservation Track. Growing up in the Mon Valley he became fascinated with the strong architectural character of the region and witnessed the breadth of its decay firsthand. Although he came to Pitt as a pharmacy student, he returned to his passion for architecture and urban industrial history and hasn't looked back. This semester he is interning with the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, the organization that first introduced him to the idea of historic preservation in middle school.

    Jiashun Gao

    Jiashun Gao is a sophomore majoring in Architecture B.S and minoring in Studio Arts. He is also pursuing a certificate in Asian Studies. He is very interested in the history, culture, and politics of different countries and has travelled to many places to gain first-hand experience. He was born and raised in China and came to the US to receive a different type of education. He chose to study architecture because it is a perfect combination of art and science. He is currently learning and exploring the abstract architectural concepts in Design Studio 1. He will pursue a M.Arch degree after graduating from Pitt.
