Joseph Scapellato

Biography
Joseph Scapellato is a junior University of Pittsburgh student pursuing a double major in Political Science and History of Art and Architecture with a minor in Classical Civilization. His primary interest involves the study of political rhetoric and its manifestations in contemporary artwork, with a secondary focus on democratic theory and innovative forms of government. Joseph has worked in Pittsburgh’s city government under Councilmember Erika Strassburger, and he has held two undergraduate teaching assistantships in the HAA department and the department of Classics. During that time, he gave lectures on ancient Greek art, the political theory of Plato, and the Spartan governmental system. Under the mentorship of Dr. Carrie Weaver, Joseph is writing his Honors Thesis on the classical influences behind plague and epidemic artwork of Early Modern Europe.
